I had a chance to go bowling with some of my co-workers this afternoon, and I had a great time, a couple of my insiders came out while I was there, but the girl in charge just had them take my turn at bowling and it worked out really good. In my 2nd game is when my insiders decided to come out. This isn't uncommon for them to do this when I'm doing something fun though, so I let them know what I was going to be doing so I could have some idea who might be coming out. I let the girl in charge of the group know so she could be ready to improvise if needed. Well, Sparky who is 18 came out and having never bowled before got me a strike followed by a spare. Then a little while later, Kim who is 8 came out and got 9 pins before she ducked back inside. I followed Kim's 9 pins with a strike and a spare. It was strange bowling and having my insiders show up, but I've learned to kind of roll with it. My final score for that game was a 166! I've NEVER had a score that high in my life, and until today, my record was 130 and I got that when I was 12 and bowling on a league. I haven't had many opportunities to bowl since then so my average score is somewhere between 95 and 110. My 1st and 3rd games weren't as good, 1st game I bowled a 101 and my 3rd game, I bowled a 94. If they go again, I'm hoping to be able to go again.. In all, I think there were about 23 of us there that bowled, and I think there were another 10 or 15 that just came to watch and socialize. So, in total there were between 30 and 40 of us.
I had ordered a book called, "A Fractured Mind" by Robert Oxnam and it arrived in the mail before I left to go bowling. I'm going to hold off on starting it though until tomorrow, otherwise I'll be up until I'm done with the whole book. The book is about Oxnam's life with having DID. He is an expert when it comes to China and that part of the world in general, and he's one of the people that our Presidents and diplomats would go to to learn about China. After he found out he had DID, he stepped down from his position as President of the Asia Society, which is the organization that specializes in understanding the culture, customs ...etc. in China and the surrounding region. When he stepped down though, he decided to go public about his DID and work to educate the public while encouraging others with DID through this book and also by becoming a public figure and has been interviewed on 60 minutes and other similar programs, not to mention some intenational news papers. He sounds like a fascinating person, and I hope, "A Fractured Mind" is as good as what it sounds in the interviews and reviews I've read online. I'm a little nervous about starting the book though, because it's my understanding that he does go into describing his past and the abuse that caused his DID. My concern is that it might stir up some stuff in me that needs to heal, which is why I decided to hold off until tomorrow to read it, aside from the fact I have trouble putting books down. I figured reading it on Sunday, would be closer to the week days and I should be seeing my therapist this week, she has to get back to me with a time for my appointment, but she's really good about getting me in earlier if I'm struggling, rather then make me wait until the end of the week so if anything does get stirred up, I won't have long to wait if it's more then what I can contend with on my own. I'm sure I'll be fine though, but as many Survivors can attest to, sometimes it doesn't take much to trigger memories sometimes, so it's always something that I like so many others have to be aware of even when we think we're doing fine and nothing can phase us. I'm looking forward to reading it though, and have been waiting to read it since I first heard about it back around November or so of last year. I found it on a site called alibris, and they have REALLY good prices there if you're looking for inexpensive books, the address is www.alibris.com "A Fractured Mind" was listed other places anywhere from $25 to $40 (US$) but I got it off alibris for $5 including shipping, and just flipping through the pages, it looks like nobody ever read it before. I ordered it on Monday and received it on Saturday, so I was impressed with how quickly the turn around was with regards to shipping speed. It was shipped by USPS Standard mail (aka Media Mail) I also ordered a relaxation CD the same time, and it arrived on Thursday, also shipped by USPS Media Mail. I would reccomend it to anyone looking for something to read, listen to or watch, but don't want to spend a lot on it. They also list new/used College Textbooks I ordered one for my Mom, and it's normally a $70 book, but I found it on alibris for $6 and had it shipped directly to her house. I placed the order a week ago on Friday, and she called and said she got it on Tuesday, and the condition was what she would call like new, because it still had that smell that is unique to new books and not a single bit of writing anywhere within it that she could see just flipping through it.
At any rate, it was a really good day for me, and I'm happy about the arrival of the book I ordered on top of being scstatic about my bowling score today.
